LYE TOWN 0  SHIFNAL TOWN 0  Midland Football League, Premier Division Saturday 23 April 2022   This was certainly not a game for the purist, as both sides struggled with a hard, uneven playing surface and a strong wind. The hosts had the better of the early play, but they found Sheridan Martinez in the visitors’ goal in inspired form. Alex Cameron had the first chance in the 8 th minute, Martinez superbly turning his 20-yard drive round the post. Ben Billingham looked to be in with a chance when he burst through the middle after 12 minutes, but he was unable to get his shot on target, Shifnal’s best chance of the first period came on 29 minutes, when Sam Griffiths’ free-kick was headed down by Andre Brown for Jeremy Abbey, but his 25-yard drive was narrowly wide.   The second half was much the same as the first, with chances few and far between. Lye’s Peter Taylor unleashed a piledriver from the edge of the penalty area after 59 minutes, but it was too close ...

SHIFNAL TOWN 3 TIVIDALE 0 Midland Football League, Premier Division Monday 18 April 2022

SHIFNAL TOWN 3   TIVIDALE 0   Midland Football League, Premier Division Monday 18 April 2022   A comprehensive victory for Shifnal against the team which put them out of the FA Cup earlier in the season, and which won at The Beeches in the league, too. A very tight first 45 minutes gave no clue as to how the game would end up. The hosts created the first chance of the game in the 5 th minute following some neat interplay, Tyrone Ofori’s 20-yard shot passing the wrong side of the upright. The visitors’ first attempt on goal came after 26 minutes, when Darragh Bustin latched on to a long kick from goalkeeper Peter Hawk, but his shot from the edge of the penalty area was straight at Andy Wycherley. It was a long ball that led to Town’s opener on 37 minutes. Ryan Pryce launched the ball from just inside the Tividale half into the penalty area, where BRANDON TANOMJIT back-headed the ball over Hawk and into the net.   Very little was seen of the visito...

HIGHGATE UNITED 2 SHIFNAL TOWN 1 Midland Football League, Premier Division Saturday 16 April 2022

HIGHGATE UNITED 2  SHIFNAL TOWN 1  Midland Football League, Premier Division Saturday 16 April 2022   After a good first half performance, Shifnal fell away after the break and ultimately got what they deserved from the game – nothing. The home side were looking for a result to ensure that they kept distance between themselves and the relegation places, and they had the majority of the possession in the first half without ever looking to trouble the Shifnal keeper Sheridan Martinez. After a period of Highgate pressure, Town came close to opening the scoring after 14 minutes. Andre Brown had a shot from 15 yards blocked by a defender, the ball falling to Ashley Brown whose shot was cleared off the line. They did score in the 35 th minute, when Tom Hill picked the pocket of a defender before crossing from the left. Reece Taylor latched on to the ball and crossed back into the middle for HILL to head past Ben Maxwell, the referee’s assistant confirming that the ball had cr...

SHIFNAL TOWN 1 STOURPORT SWIFTS 0 Midland Football League, Premier Division Saturday 9 April 2022

SHIFNAL TOWN 1  STOURPORT SWIFTS 0  Midland Football League, Premier Division Saturday 9 April 2022   A hard playing surface caused both sides problems, with the result that goalscoring opportunities were at a premium. The hosts made a good start, although the visitors had a couple of really good chances to get something from the game. Town’s Dave Easthope brought a good save from Ryan Pratt in the 3 rd minute after Tom Hill had laid the ball off to him 20 yards out. The only goal of the game came after 7 minutes, and what a goal! Swifts were bringing the ball out of defence when RYAN PRYCE nipped in to steal the ball off a defender’s toe, and fired in via the crossbar from 35 yards – Pratt could only stand and admire! Shifnal continued to have the better of the play, and Hill headed on for Tyrone Ofori on 18 minutes, but his low 20-yard shot was narrowly wide of the near post. The visitors should have equalised in the 21 st minute from their first real attempt ...

SHIFNAL TOWN 3 WHITCHURCH ALPORT 1 Midland Football League, Premier Division Saturday 2 April 2022

SHIFNAL TOWN 3   WHITCHURCH ALPORT 1   Midland Football League, Premier Division Saturday 2 April 2022   Both sides had trouble with control on a bonehard playing surface, but ultimately it was the home side that adapted better, and avenged a defeat at Whitchurch earlier in the season. The first chance of the game fell to the visitors after 5 minutes, Alex Hughes’ low shot from just outside the penalty area passing the wrong side of the upright. Ashley Brown came close for Shifnal in the 17 th minute with a 25-yard free-kick which was inches wide. Town opened the scoring on 26 minutes, JEREMY ABBEY heading home Jack Fishman’s cross from the right. Hughes again looked dangerous, and Town were pleased to see his 12-yard strike in the 34 th minute deflect off Sean Jones for a corner. 3 minutes before the break, Abbey played the ball through for Andre Brown, but his angled effort was wide of the far post.   The hosts doubled their lead after 56 minu...

BOLDMERE ST MICHAEL’S 2 SHIFNAL TOWN 0 Midland Football League, Premier Division Tuesday 29 March 2022

BOLDMERE ST MICHAEL’S 2   SHIFNAL TOWN 0   Midland Football League, Premier Division Tuesday 29 March 2022   Against possibly the best side in the league, to lose by a penalty and an own goal was not a cause for great alarm in the Shifnal camp. Town almost took the lead after just 4 minutes, when Matthew Barnes-Homer pulled the ball back from the by-line for Jeremy Abbey, but he was unable to get a good contact with the ball, which passed inches wide of the far post. Mikes opened the scoring after 9 minutes, when ROB THOMPSON-BROWN was tripped in the penalty area, the same player sending Andy Wycherley the wrong way from the spot. The tricky Kyle Byrne made a chance for himself on 26 minutes, cutting in from the right, but his shot from the edge of the box was straight at Wycherley. The visitors were giving as much as they were getting, and in the 39 th minute, Liam Palmer’s cross from the right was headed narrowly wide by Dave Easthope. Wycherley did wel...

WOLVERHAMPTON CASUALS 2 SHIFNAL TOWN 2 Midland Football League, Premier Division Saturday 26 March 2022

WOLVERHAMPTON CASUALS 2  SHIFNAL TOWN 2  Midland Football League, Premier Division Saturday 26 March 2022   This was the sort of game that would have been expected between a mid-table side and one fighting to avoid finishing in one of the relegation places. A strong wind and an uneven playing surface made controlled football difficult, but the home side adapted better to the conditions, particularly in the first 45 minutes. Casuals opened the scoring after 13 minutes, Ronan Sheehan making a fine 80-yard run before passing inside for Isaac Adegoke, who turned the ball into the path of JORDAN WILSON , the centre-forward netting from 10 yards. Town’s first decent move came on 21 minutes, when Liam Palmer put the ball through for Tom Hill, but his angled effort was wide of the far post. James Bennett-Tindall’s ball into the penalty area in the 33 rd minute fell to Jeremy Abbey, his low 15-yard shot bringing a diving save from Jake Daniel.   Shifnal looked a bette...
