LYE TOWN 0  SHIFNAL TOWN 0

Midland Football League, Premier Division

Saturday 23 April 2022

This was certainly not a game for the purist, as both sides struggled with a hard, uneven playing surface and a strong wind. The hosts had the better of the early play, but they found Sheridan Martinez in the visitors’ goal in inspired form. Alex Cameron had the first chance in the 8th minute, Martinez superbly turning his 20-yard drive round the post. Ben Billingham looked to be in with a chance when he burst through the middle after 12 minutes, but he was unable to get his shot on target, Shifnal’s best chance of the first period came on 29 minutes, when Sam Griffiths’ free-kick was headed down by Andre Brown for Jeremy Abbey, but his 25-yard drive was narrowly wide.

The second half was much the same as the first, with chances few and far between. Lye’s Peter Taylor unleashed a piledriver from the edge of the penalty area after 59 minutes, but it was too close to Martinez, who saved well. It was Shifnal that came closest to winning the game in the 84th minute. A good passing movement ended with substitute Reece Taylor crossing for fellow substitute Dan Churm, but his first-time shot from 15 yards came back off the upright.

With both sides looking for a win to finish in sixth place in the league table, the draw did neither side any favours, as Walsall Wood leap-frogged them both by winning their final game, leaving Shifnal and Lye in seventh and eighth places respectively. As far as Shifnal are concerned, following their massive upheaval midway through the season, seventh must be looked upon as a very creditable result.
