HIGHGATE UNITED 2  SHIFNAL TOWN 1

Midland Football League, Premier Division

Saturday 16 April 2022

After a good first half performance, Shifnal fell away after the break and ultimately got what they deserved from the game – nothing. The home side were looking for a result to ensure that they kept distance between themselves and the relegation places, and they had the majority of the possession in the first half without ever looking to trouble the Shifnal keeper Sheridan Martinez. After a period of Highgate pressure, Town came close to opening the scoring after 14 minutes. Andre Brown had a shot from 15 yards blocked by a defender, the ball falling to Ashley Brown whose shot was cleared off the line. They did score in the 35th minute, when Tom Hill picked the pocket of a defender before crossing from the left. Reece Taylor latched on to the ball and crossed back into the middle for HILL to head past Ben Maxwell, the referee’s assistant confirming that the ball had crossed the line.

The visitors were lethargic after the break, whilst the home side looked more purposeful. Their first serious attempt on goal came on 61 minutes, Charlie Stanton firing straight at Martinez from the edge of the penalty area. An equaliser looked likely in the 66th minute when the referee deemed Connor Hughes’ innocuous-looking tackle on Charlie Faulkner to warrant a penalty. Town considered justice had been done when Martinez made a fine save from Jamie Ashmore’s spot-kick. Town had a glorious chance to double their lead after 72 minutes when Dave Easthope burst through, but the ball stuck between his feet when he was through on goal. A minute later, the hosts were level, when CONNOR MOONEY won the ball wide on the right and fired low into the far corner of the net. There was an element of good fortune about Gates’ winner in the 87th minute. Mooney aimed a free-kick from deep into the penalty area, where it skimmed off the top of SAM GRIFFITHS’ head into his own net. The victory more or less secured the hosts’ place in the league for next season, whilst Town are playing for pride in their remaining two games.
