WOLVERHAMPTON CASUALS 2  SHIFNAL TOWN 2

Midland Football League, Premier Division

Saturday 26 March 2022

This was the sort of game that would have been expected between a mid-table side and one fighting to avoid finishing in one of the relegation places. A strong wind and an uneven playing surface made controlled football difficult, but the home side adapted better to the conditions, particularly in the first 45 minutes. Casuals opened the scoring after 13 minutes, Ronan Sheehan making a fine 80-yard run before passing inside for Isaac Adegoke, who turned the ball into the path of JORDAN WILSON, the centre-forward netting from 10 yards. Town’s first decent move came on 21 minutes, when Liam Palmer put the ball through for Tom Hill, but his angled effort was wide of the far post. James Bennett-Tindall’s ball into the penalty area in the 33rd minute fell to Jeremy Abbey, his low 15-yard shot bringing a diving save from Jake Daniel.

Shifnal looked a better side after the interval, and Hill volleyed narrowly wide from 15 yards from a 49th-minute free-kick. A minute later, the hosts should have doubled their advantage, when a quickly-taken free-kick fell to Sheehan, with Town keeper Andy Wycherley out of his goal. Sheehan shot towards the empty net, only for Wycherley to somehow get back and clear with his feet. 4 minutes later, Casuals were made to rue the missed chance, when Town substitute Dave Easthope crossed from the left for ABBEY to net with a superb near-post header. A wind-assisted goal-kick on the hour found Hill, but his 20-yard drive was turned round the post by Daniel. The hosts regained the lead somewhat out of the blue on 79 minutes, when a shot from Roger Bosio was blocked by a defender, the ball falling to substitute JOSH HESSON, who drove home from 15 yards. 2 minutes before the end of 90 minutes, it could have been worse for Shifnal when a long ball from Daniel picked out Soms Sibanda, but his tame shot was easily gathered by Wycherley. Town’s second equaliser came with 20 seconds of normal time remaining. SAM GRIFFITHS crossed from the left, the ball eluding everyone and ending up in the net, much to the dismay of the home side.
