SHIFNAL TOWN 3  WHITCHURCH ALPORT 1

Midland Football League, Premier Division

Saturday 2 April 2022

Both sides had trouble with control on a bonehard playing surface, but ultimately it was the home side that adapted better, and avenged a defeat at Whitchurch earlier in the season. The first chance of the game fell to the visitors after 5 minutes, Alex Hughes’ low shot from just outside the penalty area passing the wrong side of the upright. Ashley Brown came close for Shifnal in the 17th minute with a 25-yard free-kick which was inches wide. Town opened the scoring on 26 minutes, JEREMY ABBEY heading home Jack Fishman’s cross from the right. Hughes again looked dangerous, and Town were pleased to see his 12-yard strike in the 34th minute deflect off Sean Jones for a corner. 3 minutes before the break, Abbey played the ball through for Andre Brown, but his angled effort was wide of the far post.

The hosts doubled their lead after 56 minutes, when Fishman’s corner was headed goalwards by Andre Brown. The ball was blocked, but SAM GRIFFITHS latched on to the loose ball and drove into the roof of the net from close range. Tyrone Ofori and Andre Brown had further chances before Town made the game safe with a third goal on 72 minutes. A ball in from the left picked out Liam Palmer, who played it forward to DAVE EASTHOPE with his back to goal. He took a couple of touches before rolling the ball into the bottom corner from 10 yards. Alport substitute Joe Flory came into his own in the final quarter of an hour, causing a few problems to the Shifnal defence. A defensive slip in the 80th minute let FLORY in, and after running 25 yards, he chipped Andy Wycherley from the edge of the penalty area, to the delight of the visitors’ fans. Shortly afterwards, following good play on the left, a cross was chested down for Flory, but his 18-yard shot was saved comfortably by Wycherley.
