Midland Football League, Premier Division

An entertaining clash between two middle-of-the-table sides ended with honours even, although on balance, Shifnal possibly deserved more. The visitors made the perfect start, with a goal inside 2 minutes. A good break down the left ended with ANDRE BROWN calmly slotting the ball past the home keeper from 15 yards. The home side hit back, and were level after 11 minutes, when JACK BOWATER smashed home a ball crossed from the left, from the edge of the penalty area. 4 minutes later, a moment of controversy saw Shifnal denied a goal when Andre Brown rose to head home a cross from Liam Palmer, the Town players stunned when the referee awarded the hosts a free-kick for an alleged foul on the goalkeeper. Town’s misery was compounded in the 21st minute, when Stone took the lead in bizarre fashion. The Town keeper hesitated a fraction too long in attempting to clear a high through ball, kicking the ball against Jack Tomlinson. The ball went high into the air, then took a wicked bounce leaving Wycherley stranded, and TOMLINSON stroked the ball into the empty net. An equaliser looked likely on 31 minutes when a long ball over the top deceived home keeper Andrew Walklate, but a defender whipped the ball off Tom Hill’s toe as he was about to shoot.

Shifnal started the second half in similar fashion to the first, equalising after 48 minutes. A fine through ball from substitute Dave Easthope found ANDRE BROWN, who drove low into the far corner of the net from 18 yards. As the second half proceeded, Town strengthened their grip on the game, and looked like they were likely to grab a winner before the end. This might well have happened, had it not been for an injury to Jack Fishman some 10 minutes before the end, causing him to limp off, with all substitutes having been used. Shifnal still pressed, but could not quite find the finishing touch.
