SHIFNAL TOWN 1  HANLEY TOWN 0

Midland Football League, Premier Division

Tuesday 15 March 2022

A gritty performance from Shifnal saw them inflict only Hanley’s second league defeat of the season. The hosts made a bright start, and Jack Fishman’s through ball found Matthew Barnes-Homer in space in the first minute, but his 20-yard shot was too high. Most of the play took place in the middle third of the pitch, with not a lot of goalmouth action. The visitors looked dangerous on 19 minutes, but Andy Wycherley kept the scoresheet blank with a couple of fine saves. A good move on the Shifnal right a minute before the break ended with Brandon Tanomjit firing over from the edge of the penalty area.

The only goal of the game came a minute into the second period, JEREMY ABBEY firing home after the visiting keeper had made a good save. The visitors pressed hard to get back on terms, but the home defence was superb and hardly put a foot wrong. The closest Hanley came to a goal was a Carl Dickinson 25-yard free-kick which passed a foot wide of the foot of the post in the 85th minute.

Shifnal will be well pleased with their last two results, having beaten the top two sides in the league.
