Having gone in at the break level at 1-1, Shifnal were most unlucky to lose to a stoppage-time penalty. In the opening 20 minutes, Mikes’ Kyle Byrne was given the freedom of the park – indeed, it would not have been a surprise if he had driven his sheep across the centre circle at half-time! He gave James Bloor a torrid time, creating several good chances which were not converted. Shifnal opened the scoring from their first attack after 24 minutes, totally against the run of play, from the best piece of football of the whole game. Ashley Brown, on his debut, made a surging run half the length of the field, then pulled the ball back from the by-line for TYRONE OFORI to net at the far post. Inevitably, the lead was short-lived, the visitors equalising 5 minutes later when JOSEPH DALEY converted Lewis Archer’s low cross from the right. The hosts could have taken the lead again on 41 minutes, following a mis-cued clearance by Adam Whitehouse in the Boldmere goal, Dave Easthope’s low 25-yard effort passing inches wide of the unguarded goal.

 

The second half was a much more even affair, and neither goalkeeper was severely troubled until the 88th minute, when a Town corner came out to substitute Callum Graybrook, whose 18-yard screamer was superbly turned over the crossbar by Whitehouse. Then came the penalty in the 2nd minute of stoppage time, when Connor Hughes brought down ROBBIE THOMPSON-BROWN as he cut in from the corner. The same player picked himself up and dispatched the spot kick to break Town hearts.

The majority of the first half was a drab affair punctuated by a few glaring misses by Shifnal in particular and a breakaway goal by AFC. The first effort on either goal came in the 15 th minute when George Scott in the Shifnal goal dived low to his right to keep out a shot from the edge of the box. On 22 mins Shifnals Brandon Tanomjit should have hit the target with a free header from 8 yards but put it wide. AFC took the lead slightly against the run of play on 29 mins when Ty Knight was left completely free and beat Scott with a fine shot from 18 yards.   BOLDMERE ST MICHAEL’S 2   SHIFNAL TOWN 0   Midland Football League, Premier Division Tuesday 29 March 2022   Against possibly the best side in the league, to lose by a penalty and an own goal was not a cause for great alarm in the Shifnal camp. Town almost took the lead after just 4 minutes, when Matthew Barnes-Homer pulled the ball back from the by-line for Jeremy Abbey, but he was unable to get a good contact with the ball, which passed inches wide of the far post. Mikes opened the scoring after 9 minutes, when ROB THOMPSON-BROWN was tripped in the penalty area, the same player sending Andy Wycherley the wrong way from the spot. The tricky Kyle Byrne made a chance for himself on 26 minutes, cutting in from the right, but his shot from the edge of the box was straight at Wycherley. HIGHGATE UNITED 2  SHIFNAL TOWN 1  Midland Football League, Premier Division Saturday 16 April 2022   After a good first half performance, Shifnal fell away after the break and ultimately got what they deserved from the game – nothing. The home side were looking for a result to ensure that they kept distance between themselves and the relegation places, and they had the majority of the possession in the first half without ever looking to trouble the Shifnal keeper Sheridan Martinez. After a period of Highgate pressure, Town came close to opening the scoring after 14 minutes. Andre Brown had a shot from 15 yards blocked by a defender, the ball falling to Ashley Brown whose shot was cleared off the line.
