Perhaps not surprisingly, Shifnal never recovered after conceding a goal after just 18 seconds – particularly as they were 2-0 down after 7 minutes. Straight from the kick-off, the visitors surged forwards, the ball falling to ROMARIO MARTIN on the edge of the penalty area. He sidestepped a challenge, then drove low in to the net, giving Andy Wycherley no chance. Then on 7 minutes, the hosts made a hash of defending a free-kick, the ball falling to CAL TEMPLETON who prodded home from close range. 3 minutes later, Town thought they had pulled a goal back, when Tyrone Ofori headed home from James Bennett-Tindall’s free-kick, but the referee blew for an infringement. Midway through the half, Jack Fishman tested keeper Dan Crane with a 25-yard free-kick, which he pushed over the crossbar. Martin did well on the half hour, holding off Sam Griffiths’ challenge, but Wycherley was able to shovel his shot from the edge of the penalty area past the post. Fishman again brought the best out of Crane with a free-kick from similar distance to his previous one, the keeper again fingertipping the ball over the crossbar.

 

4 minutes into the second half, the visitors were within a whisker of extending their lead in bizarre fashion. Arman Khoshkhoo spotted Wycherley off his line and launched the ball goalwards from the halfway line. The home keeper hastily scrambled back and just managed to turn the ball round the post for a corner. Ofori was close to grabbing a goal for Town in the 57th minute following a goalmouth melee, his shot being deflected wide for a corner. The closest the hosts came to a goal came on 68 minutes, Bennett-Tindall’s 25-yard shot being acrobatically turned past the post by Crane. A minute before the final whistle, Ofori made a good run on the right before playing the ball inside for Andre Brown, but his 20-yard shot curled the wrong side of the post.

The majority of the first half was a drab affair punctuated by a few glaring misses by Shifnal in particular and a breakaway goal by AFC. The first effort on either goal came in the 15 th minute when George Scott in the Shifnal goal dived low to his right to keep out a shot from the edge of the box. On 22 mins Shifnals Brandon Tanomjit should have hit the target with a free header from 8 yards but put it wide. AFC took the lead slightly against the run of play on 29 mins when Ty Knight was left completely free and beat Scott with a fine shot from 18 yards.   BOLDMERE ST MICHAEL’S 2   SHIFNAL TOWN 0   Midland Football League, Premier Division Tuesday 29 March 2022   Against possibly the best side in the league, to lose by a penalty and an own goal was not a cause for great alarm in the Shifnal camp. Town almost took the lead after just 4 minutes, when Matthew Barnes-Homer pulled the ball back from the by-line for Jeremy Abbey, but he was unable to get a good contact with the ball, which passed inches wide of the far post. Mikes opened the scoring after 9 minutes, when ROB THOMPSON-BROWN was tripped in the penalty area, the same player sending Andy Wycherley the wrong way from the spot. The tricky Kyle Byrne made a chance for himself on 26 minutes, cutting in from the right, but his shot from the edge of the box was straight at Wycherley. HIGHGATE UNITED 2  SHIFNAL TOWN 1  Midland Football League, Premier Division Saturday 16 April 2022   After a good first half performance, Shifnal fell away after the break and ultimately got what they deserved from the game – nothing. The home side were looking for a result to ensure that they kept distance between themselves and the relegation places, and they had the majority of the possession in the first half without ever looking to trouble the Shifnal keeper Sheridan Martinez. After a period of Highgate pressure, Town came close to opening the scoring after 14 minutes. Andre Brown had a shot from 15 yards blocked by a defender, the ball falling to Ashley Brown whose shot was cleared off the line.
