WORCESTER CITY 2  SHIFNAL TOWN 1

Midland Football League, Premier Division

Wednesday 19 January 2022

A good game, with a lot of good football played by both sides. The host had the better of the first half, but Town were on top for long periods after the break, and were unlucky not to come away with at least a point. City are one of the better sides in this league, but they are unfortunately lumbered with a group of around fifty Neanderthals congregated behind the Shifnal goal, who spent the whole of the game chanting and singing inane obscene “songs”. After a cagy start to the game, the visitors took the lead after 14 minutes, when a fine through ball found MATTHEW BARNES-HOMER, who calmly slotted home form the edge of the penalty area. The Town defence then proceeded to take something of a battering. 2 minutes after the goal, a low cross from the right just evaded the inrushing Archie Muirhead. Then midway through the half, a long ball picked out Bailey Fuller on the right in acres of space, but his fierce shot was well saved by George Scott. Unsurprisingly, City took the lead after 28 minutes from a similar move. FULLER again received the ball with not a defender in sight, and this time he fired hard and true into the top corner of the net from 15 yards. 3 minutes later, the home side was ahead. Scott did well to save from Reiss Taylor Randle, but the ball fell to WILL GIBBONS, who turned the ball home from close range.

A minute into the second period, Sean Jones was close to an equaliser, when his header from a left wing cross flashed the wrong side of the upright. Muirhead and Fuller had chances to extend the City lead before Shifnal began to turn the screw. Substitute James Bennett-Tindall’s volley was too high from Callum Graybrook’s cross on 70 minutes. Then in the 77th minute, home keeper Adam Harrison did well to save at the foot of the post from Graybrook’s 15-yard effort. 3 minutes later, a pinpoint cross from Bennett-Tindall was headed inches wide by Andre Brown. It looked odds on an equaliser in the 84th minute, when Graybrook crossed low for Bennett-Tindall, but his fierce drive beat Harrison only to be cleared off the line by a defender. A minute later, Sean Jones was desperately unlucky as his header from a right wing cross grazed the upright.
