A lack-lustre display from Shifnal saw them bow out of the FA Cup at the first attempt in a strange game, where both goals came against the run of play, and yet Town rarely looked like scoring. The game started slowly with Town having slightly the better of play and spending long periods in the hosts’ half of the field. The turning point in the game came after 27 minutes, when Town’s Jake Lloyd was shown a straight red card for a heavy tackle on Dan Smith. Worse was to come as the resulting free-kick fell to JORDAN EDWARDS, who turned in the box and fired low past Jake James from 12 yards. The visitors did not allow their heads to fall, and tried to take the game to Tividale, without ever really looking like getting past their central defensive pairing of Ben Birch and Matt Hunt.

 

It was apparent form the start of the second period that the hosts were confident that they could hold on to their slender lead, packing their defence and looking to cause problems on the break. It took Shifnal until the 61st minute to manage a shot on target, Brad Sharman’s low drive from the edge of the penalty area being too close to Adam Harrison. A minute later, Tividale broke down the left with DAN SMITH picking Tom Taylor’s pocket and drilling low into the far corner from 20 yards. This gave the home side more reason to sit back and await opportunities to break. This they did after 71 minutes, only a fine save by James denying Edwards his second. 3 minutes later, Smith was adjudged to have been fouled in the penalty area, but James again saved superbly. On balance, the home side deserved to go through to the next round, largely due to the lack of ideas of Shifnal going forward.

Town almost took the lead after just 4 minutes, when Matthew Barnes-Homer pulled the ball back from the by-line for Jeremy Abbey, but he was unable to get a good contact with the ball, which passed inches wide of the far post. HIGHGATE UNITED 2  SHIFNAL TOWN 1  Midland Football League, Premier Division Saturday 16 April 2022   After a good first half performance, Shifnal fell away after the break and ultimately got what they deserved from the game – nothing. The home side were looking for a result to ensure that they kept distance between themselves and the relegation places, and they had the majority of the possession in the first half without ever looking to trouble the Shifnal keeper Sheridan Martinez. After a period of Highgate pressure, Town came close to opening the scoring after 14 minutes.
