SHIFNAL TOWN 1  LYE TOWN 4

J W Hunt Cup, Round 3

Tuesday 11 January 2022

This was not one of Shifnal’s better performances, against a well-organised Lye side that always seemed to want the result more than their hosts. Shifnal started quite well, and in the 5th minute, Tom Hill crossed from the by-line for Matthew Barnes-Homer, whose header was too high. Lye’s opener came against the run of play in the 7th minute. A crossfield ball from the left caught the home defence napping, and HARRISON COOK slotted under George Scott from the edge of the penalty area. It looked as if the hosts had equalised on 15 minutes, when Reece Taylor did well on the right before firing low towards goal. Hill beat the keeper to the ball and netted, only to be denied by the assistant’s flag. 3 minutes later, Shifnal struggled to clear a corner, but Ben Billingham’s powerful 10-yard drive was straight at Scott. Lye extended their lead after 21 minutes, when OLIVER WEST’s low 20-yard shot squirmed under Scott and rolled gently into the far corner of the goal. Barnes-Homer had a chance to pull a goal back in the 27th minute, when Scott’s long clearance evaded the defence and fell to him, but his attempt to chip Ben Newey was not quite high enough. Lye’s third goal came on 42 minutes, courtesy of an unfortunate error by Scott. He fumbled a shot from the left, the ball falling to WEST, who gratefully tapped in his second.

A glimmer of hope appeared for the home side a minute into the second period, when Barnes-Homer’s shot was saved by Newey, HILL following up to net the loose ball. Sadly, this was the last time Shifnal came within sight of goal, and the visitors wrapped up the game on 63 minutes. Scott came quickly off his line to foil an attack, but the ball fell to BILLINGHAM, who lobbed the ball into the unguarded net from 30 yards.
