SHIFNAL TOWN 5  BEWDLEY TOWN 0

Midland Football League, Premier Division

Saturday 4 December 2021

After a very tumultuous week for the club, where we have welcomed new manager Jamie Haynes and his assistant manager Kevin Sandwith, Shifnal Town lined up in the Midland Football League game against Bewdley Town with a very different team we have been used to seeing over the last couple of seasons. With so many new faces it was uncertain how the team would gel, but it only took 7 minutes for Shifnal to create their first real opportunity with Tom Hill cutting the ball back to Callum Graybrook who’s shot was saved. A couple minutes later Shifnal were put under pressure when a wayward goal kick ended at the feet of the opposition who quickly counter attacked, with Bewdleys Laurie Morris getting a cross into the box which was dealt with by the ever efficient Connor Hughes. More opportunities created for Shifnal, including a powerful shot just outside the box from Tom Hill. It felt it was just a matter of time before Shifnal scored and that came on 19 minutes after Callum Graybrook gave a low cross which was left by Tom Hill to Matthew Barnes-Homer who smashed the ball from the edge of the area into the back of the net via the underside of the crossbar. 25 minutes and a high bouncing ball in the Shifnal area had Bewdleys Josh Carpenter and Shifnals goalkeeper George Scott both challenge for the ball, with George ending up on the ground, luckily George was able to get back up and playing. More chances were being carved out by Shifnal who continued to look the more dangerous teams with good opportunities for Matt Barnes-Homer and Tom Hill, but still 1 – 0. Bewdley then nearly levelled the scoring after a deflected looping cross ended near the back post where Luke Morris couldn’t find the target. Shifnal finally got a second on 39 minutes through an own goal by Jordan Graham after some good work but not the greatest of shots by Dave Easthope on the edge of the area. Just before half time Bewdley had the clearest of chances as a low cross was missed by the keeper and defence, however Luke Morris somehow missed from 3 yards out in the centre of an open net. The start of the second half didn’t really create any clear cut chances until 57th minute where the fantastic Reece Taylor made yet another interception and burst down the right hand side, only for his cross to find the keepers hands. 60th minute and Matt Barnes-Homer was creating again with a fantastic through ball to Easthope who hit a great shot that hit the inside of the post. 68th minute and Shifnal got their 3rd goal of the game with Barnes-Homer a creator again after a neat back heel found Graybrook whose left footed shot slid past Joe Sidaway. 2 minutes later and Reece Taylor was bursting into the Bewdley area only to be taken down, Penalty! Barnes-Homer steps up and sends the keeper the wrong way sliding the ball to the keepers left hand side. 4-0. A good 5/10 minute spell was then ensued by Bewdley who were asking some questions of the Shifnal defence, but Shifnal seemed to have all the answers. On 78 minutes Shifnal scored their 5th and final goal of the day with Graybrook getting on the end of a Jamie Bloor cross, Joe Sidaway was able to get a hand to the shot but it wasn’t enough. It was all Shifnal from then on in, however they were not able to add any more goals.
