OLD WULFRUNIANS 1  SHIFNAL TOWN 2

J W Hunt Cup, Round 2

Tuesday 16 November 2021

Over the 90 minutes, there is little doubt that Shifnal were the better side, but they were made to work very hard for their victory – indeed, the hosts could have won the game moments before Town grabbed the winner. The visitors started strongly, and in the 4th minute, Jamie Bostock pushed Rees Wedderburn’s cross into the path of Jake Webb, but his shot was deflected for a corner. A minute later, Town were ahead when a corner was knocked out to TOM HILL, who made no mistake from 10 yards. Almost from the kick-off, the hosts went on the attack, and following some poor defending, the ball was played to LOUIS HARPER, who slid the ball past the advancing keeper for the equaliser. Most of the remainder of the first half was played in the Old Wulfs half, but attack after attack petered out in the last third of the field. Bostock saved well from Webb on the half-hour, then a couple of minutes before half-time, Hill headed onto the roof of the net from Wedderburn’s cross.

The second half followed a similar pattern to the first, with the visitors having most of the play, but rarely looking like regaining their lead. Wedderburn brought the best out of Bostock in the 48th minute with a low 20-yard shot, but Town created few chances until the final 10 minutes. An error by Connor Hughes set up Mark Giles for the hosts on 78 minutes, but his hurried shot was blocked. Hill wasted a golden opportunity on 80 minutes from Brandon Taylor’s cross, but he mis-timed his jump and headed wide. 4 minutes later, Webb picked out substitute Jay Holdcroft at the near post, but he swivelled and shot past the far post. A minute into stoppage time, Giles looked as if he must win the game for the home side, but his 20-yard drive was saved at full stretch by Jake James. A minute later, with penalties looming, the visitors broke and the ball fell to HOLDCROFT on the edge of the penalty area, and he broke Wulfs’ hearts as he stroked the ball into the bottom corner of the net to send Town into the last eight of the competition.
