BEWDLEY TOWN 3 SHIFNAL TOWN 8
Midland Football
League, Premier Division
Tuesday 9 November 2021
A topsy-turvy game if ever there was one, as
Town raced into an early 3-goal lead, only to allow the hosts to pull back to
3-2 (not for the first time this season). A few harsh words in the
dressing-room at half-time then ensured that the lead was rarely threatened in
the second period, although Bewdley, to their credit, never gave up. After
Harry Cunningham had gone close early on, the visitors took the lead from a
corner in the 11th minute, Rees Wedderburn’s kick being headed home
at the far post by the unmarked LEWIS
RILEY-STEWART. A minute later, the same player almost netted for the
hosts as he deflected a left-wing cross, George Scott making a fine save. James
Bennett-Tindall then had a couple of chances to extend Town’s lead, first
heading straight at the keeper from Jay Holdcroft’s cross, then seeing his
floated effort come back off the inside of the post following good work by
Cunningham. The second goal came after 23 minutes as Jake Webb and Wedderburn
combined on the right, Webb’s low cross being tapped in at the far post by HOLDCROFT. 3 minutes later,
Bennett-Tindall made a good run down the right, and his low cross gave HOLDCROFT another tap-in. The visitors
eased off with the game seemingly won, and were made to pay as Bewdley grabbed
two goals in 3 minutes to get right back into the game. A swift break in the 38th
minute caught the visitors’ defence napping, and DYLAN HART lashed the ball home from 10 yards. Then on 41
minutes, HART again broke –
despite looking to be several yard offside – and rounded Scott before tapping
into an empty net. Vociferous penalty appeals by Shifnal on the stroke of
half-time saw Riley-Stewart sin-binned for the first 10 minutes of the second
half.
Shifnal started the second period with all ten
men behind the ball until Riley-Stewart reappeared, but then normal service was
resumed. A fine ball over the top on 57 minutes picked out CUNNINGHAM flying down the left, and he calmly beat Joe
Sidaway with an angled shot. 2 minutes later, a cross from the left was played
inside for WEDDERBURN, who
fired into the corner of the net from 20 yards. An unfortunate error by Scott
gifted SAM LESTER a third
goal for the hosts in the 63rd minute, giving them a glimmer of
hope, but Shifnal ensured that they were not allowed to build on this. A
one-two between substitute Tom Hill and Wedderburn after 72 minutes opened up
the home defence again, and Wedderburn’s low cross was tapped in by HILL. Shifnal’s seventh goal
came on 84 minutes when HILL
outpaced the home defence and chipped over Sidaway from 10 yards. A minute
later, Hill should have notched his hat-trick as he was played through again,
but the ball bobbled as he chipped the keeper again, and it came back off the
crossbar. 2 minutes further on, substitute Kyle Montague’s cross from the left
was too high, but Webb retrieved the ball and played inside for WEDDERBURN to fire home from 15
yards.
