J W Hunt Cup, Round 1

Tuesday 12 October 2021

Shifnal progressed to the next round of the competition against a spirited Willenhall side that plays at a lower level. It took almost an hour before the hosts looked comfortable. Willenhall came close to opening the scoring after 13 minutes, when Jayquarm Mullings’ free-kick was headed by Jack Dale onto the roof of the net. The home side had strong appeals for a penalty turned down by the referee a minute later, when Brad Smith appeared to be tripped in the opposition penalty area. Following a period of sustained pressure, they did break the deadlock in the 18th minute when Rees Wedderburn’s corner was headed goalwards, and KYLE MONTAGUE turned the ball in from close range. The visitors continued to give as good as they got, and came within a whisker of an equaliser on 33 minutes. Kristian Balozi broke swiftly down the left, and his cross was just out of Dale’s reach. 3 minutes later, Tom Hill headed out to Wedderburn on the right; he came inside and his curling effort from 25 yards was fingertipped away by Chris Adams.

Early in the second period, a short corner was played to Jake Webb, and his cross was headed inches wide by Montague. The all-important second goal came in the 58th minute when Webb cut in from the right, then pulled the ball back for JAY HOLDCROFT to drill past Adams from 15 yards. A minute later, Jordan Jones’ cross found Hill, but his header came back off the upright into Adams’ arms. Two goals in a minute eventually ensured Shifnal’s victory. Webb was tripped in the penalty area on 75 minutes, and HOLDCROFT buried his spot-kick into the bottom corner. Virtually from the re-start, the ball was played down the right and WEDDERBURN took advantage of a defensive slip to slot into the far corner of the net.

Willenhall continued to fight and 2 minutes before the final whistle, substitute Josh Oakley’s 18-yard drive was saved at full stretch by George Scott.
