 SHIFNAL TOWN 2  ROMULUS 3

Midland Football League, Premier Division

Saturday 9 October 2021

This game was won and lost in the first 45 minutes, as Shifnal were unable to test Josh Benton in the visitors’ goal. Danger signs were there as early as the 7th minute, when Deshon Carty’s header from a right-wing corner was headed off the line. Sufyan Zia saw his 30-yard free-kick deflected for a corner on 20 minutes, Callum Smith getting the final touch to prevent a goal. A minute later, the visitors were ahead as Town showed their vulnerability from corners, CAMERON LEE heading home unchallenged. The second goal had an element of luck after 33 minutes. Kyle Pearson stumbled on the ball, OWEN WATKINS pouncing and firing in off the far post from 20 yards. The visitors’ defence had barely been troubled up until this stage, but the feeling was that if Town could keep the damage down to two goals, there was hope for the second half. It was not to be, however, as 2 minutes into stoppage time, WATKINS received the ball wide on the right. He made ground before letting fly from an angle, the ball taking a huge deflection off a defender and entering the net via the crossbar.

After some harsh words in the dressing room at half-time, it was a different Shifnal side that came out for the second period, with Tom Hill being introduced after a spell out with injury. Jake Webb laid the ball off to Hill in the 51st minute, and his 20-yard strike was palmed away by Benton. Town pressed and were rewarded after 57 minutes, when Pearson sent Hill away down the left. HILL beat a defender, then drove low into the far corner of the net. Barely had the crowd settled when Shifnal pulled another goal back 2 minutes later. Players struggled to control a bouncing ball on the edge of the Romulus box, before KYLE MONTAGUE took charge and fired home off the upright. The visitors came back and Zia brought a good save from Callum Smith on 67 minutes with a 20-yard free-kick. Shifnal went back on the attack, and in the 72nd minute, Harry Cunningham and Angelo Franco combined to set up Keanu Cooper, but his rasping drive from 25 yards struck the top of the crossbar. Try as they might, Town were unable to grab an equaliser against a side that took time-wasting to a whole new level.
