RACING CLUB WARWICK 2  SHIFNAL TOWN 3

Midland Football League, Premier Division

Saturday 2 October 2021

Shifnal played their best football of the season so far, over the course of the first 25 minutes, and opened up a 3-0 lead, which could have been 6-0! They nearly came to rue missed chances as the hosts clawed their way back into the game, but fortunately Warwick’s second goal came moments before the final whistle. Town signalled their intent as early as the 4th minute, when Jake Webb’s angled effort from 20 yards brought a diving save from Lewis Walker. 2 minutes later, they were ahead, when Walker was unable to hold on to Jay Holdcroft’s 20-yard drive, KYLE MONTAGUE following up to net the loose ball. The visitors doubled their advantage a minute later when Webb pulled the ball back from the by-line for KEANU COOPER to lash home at the far post. A minute further on, Jordan Uppal saw Walker manage to turn his swirling cross over the crossbar, as the hosts were second to virtually every ball. Montague was unlucky in the 14th minute when his curling 20-yard shot came back off the upright, following Town’s best move of the game. The third goal came when Harry Cunningham broke down the right wing, and HOLDCROFT was on hand at the far post to convert his low cross. The home side were given a foothold in the game after 25 minutes, when defensive sloppiness allowed Miracle Okafor to roll the ball past debutant keeper Callum Smith. The ball struck the foot of the post, and ROMARIO MARTIN almost apologetically tapped the ball into the unguarded net.

Shifnal created a couple of early chances after the break, Holdcroft firing wide from 20 yards on 47 minutes, then Cunningham having a 15-yard shot saved at the second attempt by Walker a minute later. Smith made his only real save of the game in the 70th minute, saving Martin’s snap shot with his outstretched foot. Town substitute Rees Wedderburn was unlucky when his 82nd minute 25-yard free-kick took a deflection, and looped onto the top of the crossbar. The hosts pulled another goal back in the 3rd minute of stoppage time, when MARTIN weaved his way through, rounded the keeper, and slammed the ball into the empty net, but it was too little, too late for Warwick to get anything from the game.
