Despite the scoreline, Shifnal had enough chances to have had the game won by half-time. Ultimately though, it was a good result, considering the absentees from Town’s starting line-up. They were close to opening the scoring with only 40 seconds on the clock, as Tom Hill streaked down the right and cut inside, only for Lloyd Ransome to block his fierce shot, then Kieron Northwood’s follow-up was blocked by a defender. The visitors came back, and George Scott saved comfortably from Jai Verma’s 20-yard effort after 7 minutes. A minute later, Jay Holdcroft should have scored with a header from Harry Cunningham’s pinpoint cross, the ball passing the wrong side of the upright. Shifnal deservedly took the lead in the 16th minute, when Cunningham’s persistence paid off, enabling him to win the ball just outside the penalty area. He touched the ball to Jake Webb, whose low cross was turned in at the far post by HILL. Midway through the half Holdcroft played a through ball for Hill, but Ransome made a fine save, turning the ball round the post. The visitors were still in the game, and Kevin Monteiro’s 35th-minute shot from the edge of the penalty area was saved at the foot of the post by Scott. 3 minutes later, a flowing Shifnal move ended with Cunningham’s angled drive stinging Ransome’s palms.

 

A minute into the second period, the hosts were shocked when the visitors grabbed the equalising goal. A defensive slip let in VERMA, who calmly slotted past Scott from the edge of the penalty area. Town re-grouped, and they regained their lead on 53 minutes. A clever free-kick by Cunningham into the penalty area was converted by HOLDCROFT, sliding in at the far post. They should have sealed victory after 81 minutes when substitute Angelo Franco’s superb ball over the top found Webb, who rounded Ransome before blazing high over the crossbar. 3 minutes later, Webb was through again, but his angled drive was inches wide of the far post.

 

This encouraging performance took Town to second place in the league table. Next week, they face the league leaders in the 2nd Qualifying Round of the Buildbase FA Vase, Boldmere St Michael’s, away from home, which promises to be a cracker.

The first effort on either goal came in the 15 th minute when George Scott in the Shifnal goal dived low to his right to keep out a shot from the edge of the box. On 22 mins Shifnals Brandon Tanomjit should have hit the target with a free header from 8 yards but put it wide.   BOLDMERE ST MICHAEL’S 2   SHIFNAL TOWN 0   Midland Football League, Premier Division Tuesday 29 March 2022   Against possibly the best side in the league, to lose by a penalty and an own goal was not a cause for great alarm in the Shifnal camp. Town almost took the lead after just 4 minutes, when Matthew Barnes-Homer pulled the ball back from the by-line for Jeremy Abbey, but he was unable to get a good contact with the ball, which passed inches wide of the far post. Mikes opened the scoring after 9 minutes, when ROB THOMPSON-BROWN was tripped in the penalty area, the same player sending Andy Wycherley the wrong way from the spot. The tricky Kyle Byrne made a chance for himself on 26 minutes, cutting in from the right, but his shot from the edge of the box was straight at Wycherley. HIGHGATE UNITED 2  SHIFNAL TOWN 1  Midland Football League, Premier Division Saturday 16 April 2022   After a good first half performance, Shifnal fell away after the break and ultimately got what they deserved from the game – nothing. The home side were looking for a result to ensure that they kept distance between themselves and the relegation places, and they had the majority of the possession in the first half without ever looking to trouble the Shifnal keeper Sheridan Martinez. After a period of Highgate pressure, Town came close to opening the scoring after 14 minutes. Andre Brown had a shot from 15 yards blocked by a defender, the ball falling to Ashley Brown whose shot was cleared off the line.
