(Boldmere won 3-2 on penalties)

Buildbase FA Vase, 2nd Qualifying Round

Saturday 25 September 2021

This game was all that you would expect from two teams at the top of the league – a ding-dong battle which could have gone either way right up until the final whistle. The hosts had the first chance in the 2nd minute, when Robbie Thompson-Brown controlled a ball in from the left, but his shot on the turn from the edge of the penalty area was wide. The visitors then began to create the better chances, and a crossfield ball from Harry Cunningham after 9 minutes picked out Jake Webb, who cut in, only for his low 15-yard shot to be saved well by Dan Crane. Mikes went close on 33 minutes, when Thompson-Brown’s free-kick was headed over by Harry Craven. A minute later, Shifnal took the lead with a bizarre goal. KYLE MONTAGUE and a defender went up for Jordan Uppal’s long throw into the box. The defender got his head to the ball first, but it ricocheted off the striker’s head and looped over Crane and into the net. It could have been 2-0 2 minutes later, when Webb played in Kieron Northwood on the left, but his 12-yard shot came back off the near post.

The home side came out for the second period with all guns blazing, and were level on 48 minutes, when ALEX McSKEANE cut in from the left and drilled the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the penalty area. Worse was to come for Town in the 52nd minute, when a cross from the left found THOMPSON-BROWN at the far post for a tap-in. This prompted Shifnal into their best spell of the game. Uppal steamed down the right in the 57th minute, but Crane dived to save his powerful drive at the foot of the near post. 2 minutes later, the scores were level. Northwood took advantage of some defensive slackness and played the ball through for JAY HOLDCROFT, who slid it past Crane from 12 yards. A Webb corner after 63 minutes saw some desperate defending, with two shots being cleared off the line as Town pushed to regain their lead. It was the home side, however, that grabbed the fifth goal of the game on 77 minutes. They broke down the left, and a low cross was converted at the far post by substitute REECE LEEK. Shifnal were awarded a free-kick a couple of yards inside the Mikes’ half a minute into stoppage time. Goalkeeper George Scott took the kick as Town pushed everyone into the penalty area, and he found Jordan Jones, who headed inside for MONTAGUE to bundle the ball over the line. The visitors could have won the game in the 5th minute of time added on, when substitute Brad Sharman was through on goal, but Crane was bravely off his line to take the game into a penalty shoot-out. The home side kept the cooler heads, and ran out winners by 3-2.
