SHIFNAL TOWN VS WOLVERHAMPTON CASUALS Midland Football League, Premier Division Tuesday 17 August 2021

SHIFNAL TOWN 6  WOLVERHAMPTON CASUALS 1

Midland Football League, Premier Division

Tuesday 17 August 2021

With Shifnal holding a slender 2-1 lead at the interval, no one could have expected the second half goal-fest, as the hosts clicked into gear properly for the first time this season. Town opened the scoring after 9 minutes, pouncing on a defensive error to send Tom Hill through on goal. He rounded the keeper, but a defender blocked his shot, only for HARRY CUNNINGHAM to tap in the loose ball. The home side were looking dangerous at this point, and Jay Holdcroft went close from the edge of the penalty area on 13 minutes, after being set up by Cunningham. 2 minutes later the scores were level, when a powerful drive from Callum Head was too hot for Jake James to hold, KIENAN PALMER netting the rebound from 10 yards. Shortly afterwards, Oliver Waddison’s fierce 25-yard effort was inches over the crossbar. Town regained their lead in the 21st minute following a fine run down the left by Hill. His cross was blocked but the ball looped to CUNNINGHAM, who grabbed a rare headed goal. Both sides created chances but there was no further scoring before the break.

Shifnal looked the more likely to get the vital fourth goal and were denied on 56 minutes when Hill dummied a through ball to leave Cunningham in on goal, but Adam Jenkins was swiftly off his line to deny him his hat-trick. Cunningham had a hand in Town’s third goal after 65 minutes, when he lifted the ball in from near the touchline for substitute JAKE WEBB, who controlled the ball before powering it past Jenkins from 15 yards. 3 minutes later, a flowing move down the right ended with Webb’s low cross being tapped in at the near post by KEANU COOPER with his first touch after coming on as substitute. Shortly after this, Casuals made a triple substitution, but when Reiss Corfield hobbled off on 81 minutes, this left them with ten men for the remainder of the game. They paid for this when WEBB took advantage of defensive sloppiness 3 minutes later and fired home from 18 yards. More defensive confusion in the 88th minute resulted in COOPER heading home his second and Town’s sixth.
