HANLEY TOWN VS SHIFNAL TOWN Midland Football League, Premier Division Saturday 14 August 2021

HANLEY TOWN 3  SHIFNAL TOWN 1

Midland Football League, Premier Division

Saturday 14 August 2021

Shifnal returned from the Potteries pointless, despite a much-improved performance compared to last week. With a team including several players with Football League experience, it is fair to say that Hanley are likely to be well in the mix for promotion come the end of the season. The hosts came close to opening the scoring in the first minute, when Lucas Green-Birch cut in from the right, but his acute angled shot flashed across the face of goal. Shifnal quickly got into their stride, and a good move on the right after 8 minutes saw the ball played across to Jake Webb, whose 20-yard drive was deflected for a corner. Reece Jones was causing problems to the visitors all afternoon, and Jake James had to move smartly off his line to narrow the angle in the 16th minute as he fired goalward from the left. It was the visitors who shocked the home side with the opening goal after 28 minutes. Harry Cunningham intercepted a poor clearance and played the ball forward to TOM HILL, who turned and fired home from 15 yards. 3 minutes later, Jayden Cotterill’s header from a corner was straight at James, as the home side pushed to get back on terms. With 14 seconds of the first 45 minutes left, they did equalise, when LOUIS DODDS finished off a fine move on the right with a 20-yard shot which gave James no chance.

The second period saw the hosts looking the more likely to add to their score. A fine run down the right by Joshua Green ended with his cross for Chris Dagnall’s header being saved by James. A defensive muddle nearly handed Shifnal a second goal on 53 minutes, Kieron Northwood’s 25-yard shot being headed over his own crossbar by a defender, with the keeper nowhere. A flowing move from the hosts led to their second goal in the 61st minute. The ball was played out to the left for substitute Brian Barton, and his cross was tucked in at the far post by JONES. Hanley grabbed a third on 85 minutes, when a raking ball picked out JONES, who made ground before cutting in and driving past James from 15 yards.
